Safely transporting valuable electronics like computers, televisions, audio and video equipment is important. After all, these items represent a significant financial investment that you probably don’t care to repeat until you have to, due to age or normal wear. Make sure that moving to a new home isn’t the reason you have to purchase new electronics because they get broken on moving day or arrive at your new home missing necessary components. These steps will help you pack them safely and securely.

Before your movers arrive:

  • List all electronics on your moving inventory list.
  • Submit a separate list (including serial numbers) to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance company.
  • Back up your computer files and software.
  • Hire a professional to uninstall AV equipment from the wall and TV antenna or satellite dishes from the roof.
  • When disconnecting a flat screen TV, refer to the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer for specific instructions.
  • Map out a diagram of how the wires connect (or use color-coded tape) so it easier to reconnect at your new home.
  • Disconnect all cables and wires, and pack them with the piece of equipment you just disconnected it from to make sure they don’t get separated.
  • While you’re packing, include the relevant accessories (like remote controls) in the same box, and make sure it is clearly labeled.
  • Whenever possible, pack your electronics in their original packaging. If these are not available, use sturdy cartons that fit the item securely, and use ample packing materials for cushioning. For special items, ask your moving crew about custom crating.
