Summer is the busiest time of year for the moving industry, and for good reason – moving during the summer has many advantages! The kids are out of school, days are longer, the weather is warmer: these are all good reasons to move in the summertime. However, the dog days of summer are not without their unique challenges. These hot tips will help you keep your cool during a summer move.
Plan Ahead
Knowing they are extra busy during the summer, get in touch with your moving company as soon as possible to choose your ideal moving time. Try to schedule your move for early in the morning or later in the afternoon (for smaller jobs) and avoid the midday heat. While preparing to move in high temperatures and sweltering humidity, pace yourself. Try to do a little bit of packing, cleaning and other pre-move tasks each day for a couple of weeks, rather than sweating it out at the last minute. Keep your power on until the day AFTER you move out, so you can operate fans and air conditioners. Along the same lines, have your utilities turned on at your new home before you arrive so you can stay cool while you unpack.
Beat the Heat
When moving day arrives, dress in loose clothing made of breathable fabric. Choose cotton and linen and try to avoid clingy polyester. Stay hydrated! Bring refillable water bottles, jugs and other containers, and make sure everyone drinks plenty of fluids throughout the day. Proper hydration is especially important when sweating or exerting oneself, and moving is hard work! If you are going in and out of the house frequently, apply sunscreen. Find some shade, a cool fan or an air conditioned room and take frequent breaks to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
